The castle was built in the 14th century by the Lichtenstein family, has pentagonal structure with a central keep. It is one of the largest castles in the Czech Republic. The castle was built as a defensive fortress, and it was also used as a royal residence.

The castle was damaged during the Hussite Wars in the 15th century, and it was never fully restored. The castle was abandoned in the 17th century, and it has been in ruins ever since.
