Monastery

Mariánská Týnice

Mariánská Týnice is a former Cistercian monastery and pilgrimage site. Today's Baroque form of the pilgrimage site was designed by Jan Blažej Santini on the order of the abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Plasy, Eugen Tyttl (the foundation stone of the building was laid in 1711). It is a Baroque-Rococo structure that is one of the most important examples of his work. The church is decorated with elaborate stucco work, frescoes, and stained glass.

The monastery was dissolved in 1785 during the reign of Joseph II. The buildings were later used as a hospital and a school. the pilgrimage site fell into disrepair until the 1990s, when extensive renovation began, which is still considered a textbook example of monument restoration. In 1992, the monastery was returned to the Cistercian order.
